i think we all know that shitty customer support costs a company money in the long run. but sometimes, it costs them money RIGHT AWAY. here is an example:

i buy lots of games from steam. if you dont know, steam is an online software distribution company... basically you buy games and download them, instead of buying them from a retail store. so anyway, ive got steam's "whats new" list on my RSS reader. this afternoon, the notification pops up that theres been something added to the list.

i look, and see its "judge dredd: dredd vs death"... now, i dont really know anything about the game, but i know im a judge dredd fan, and i remember hearing about the game a few years ago and just never followed up on it... so i click to see what its all about... and notice right away that the price is $0.07! thats right, seven cents!

now, steam is known for having some pretty crazy promos and sales for stuff, so i just assumed this was one of those, and i ordered right away. i mean, even if it totally sucked, or didnt even work, its seven damn cents. then i got to thinking, i never did get my brother anything for his bday... so, i order a copy for him too. (yeah, i know. a seven cent bday present. im not exactly flush with cash at the moment)... then i thought, hey, another friend of mine is having a bday in a few months, what the hell, ill get one for him too.

so now ive bought three copies. ive spent a grand total of 21 cents. and about this time, i go to pull the page up again to send it to someone else which is when i notice the price had changed to $7.99... so obviously the first price was a typo.

now, im not one of "those people" who will try to get one over on somebody when theres been an obvious mistake made. right away, i sent a message to support at steam:
well, i saw the judge dredd game pop up on my rss reader and thought, "sweet, thats one i meant to try and never did get around to picking up"... so i clicked and thought "DOUBLE sweet, it must be some kind of crazy promo or something!" when i saw it was 7 cents...

then i thought, well, ive got two birthday gifts i havent gotten yet so... i gifted it to two of my friends...

then i sent the url to a friend of mine, who just told me "dude, it isnt 7 cents, its $7.99"... so i now realize it wasnt a crazy promo, it was a typo...

so, please go ahead and cancel all 3 of those... i dont want to be one of "those people" that rips off someone just because they made a mistake... sorry :(
a few hours later, i get the following response:
Hello Tim,

un-fucking-believable.

so fuck steam. ill just play my 7-cent game, and not feel bad about it in the least, because if theyre too fucking stupid to actually READ support requests, they deserve to get fleeced.
